Description
Eastern Collared Lizard photographed on Bell Mountain in Sedona Arizona
I went to walk alone. The red rock around Sedona, AZ was a welcome place to settle back into earth. The air is different there. The sky is bigger. I noticed him ten minutes into my journey. I heard scurrying behind, on the path. I glanced back and saw no one. "Birds" I thought. I followed the ascent. The nearly silent scratches were audible again in moments. I turned in time to see his tail scrape behind the rock. I stopped and watched. Then he appeared. Mounting the peak of his own red bolder he seemed to declare himself king of the mountain. His colors were beautiful against the monochrome backdrop of Arizona reds. He carried the colors of the rain forest. Greens, yellow, oranges. He watched me. He had no fear. I came to be alone. He came to find an audience. We both got what we wanted.
